Khongoryn Els or the Singing Sand Dunes

Highlights:

- Climbing on the dunes

- The whistling noise made by the winds

- Great photographic opportunities

Travel from Ulaanbaatar:

Flights depart from Ulaanbaatar every day to Dalanzagad city. From here the dunes are a 6 hour drive to the west on increasingly rough roads

Driving from Ulaanbaatar takes around 14 hours travelling on good roads to kharkhorin and then driving directly south on dirt tracks to Saikhaan Ovoo before heading south west to the dunes.

Advice:

Be sure to climb to the top of the dunes and listen for the weird whistling noise.

The dunes make for great photo opportunities from adistance.

There are only 2 camps in the area and few nomads so be sure to book in advance.

Wear loose fitting clothes, a sunhat and suncream at all times during the summer as temperatures here are very high, also drink plenty of water.
